Emerging Layers - Armando Turino Insua

Emerging Layers is an experimental film that explores bacterial growth on 16mm film strips, created through a collaboration between filmmaker Armando Turino and scientific researcher Ruohan Zhang. The film was processed in a research laboratory over the course of several weeks. Each frame combines Skin bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, cyanobacteria, and E. coli, with intimate recordings the couple made of each other’s bodies. The work conflates human skin with the skin of the film itself, exploring the intersection between artistic practice and scientific research.
Handsome Devil - Daniel Barrow

Barrow uses Amiga software from the late 1980s (DeluxePaint 4) to create this romantic pink and green story of a "sissy devil" who probes the depths of internet intelligence, composing an “advanced search” on an antiquated search engine. Simultaneously, a naked, green, feminine artist traces the contours of her devilish destiny on her sketch pad, and then within an imaginary dating app. The “advanced search” becomes a kind of contemporary, queer, love poem.
Over the last twenty years, Barrow has used obsolete technologies to present pictorial narratives by merging the methods and cultural histories of cinema, comic books, animation, shadow puppetry and magic lantern shows. Barrow is best known for creating and adapting comic book narratives to "manual" forms of animation by projecting, layering and manipulating drawings on an overhead projector in live performance contexts.
How Now, House? - Tess Martin

How Now, House? investigates our yearning to leave traces behind through the prism of one house in Rotterdam. Using archives, personal memories and the philosophy of time, the film questions whether a space can ever really belong to one person, or time period, at all.
Tess Martin is an artist and filmmaker based in Rotterdam since 2014. She had an international upbringing and studied both fine art and animation, resulting in a mixed artistic practice. Tess has exhibited and attended residencies internationally and she occasionally lectures and gives workshops. She was a participant in Berlinale Talents in 2024.

Action Bog - Winston Hacking

A feverish stasis collapses into infinite distraction, spinning on the axis of an algorithm. Each pulse, an uncertain tone, breathes electricity into a half-alive world. Time stretches like soft polymer; metamorphoses creep forward frame by frame, suspiciously slow, as if the film were watching me back.
Photographic fragments are transferred onto clay, not quite sculpture, not quite collage, but something in between: a Tonermorph. Figures emerge mid-gesture, faces unsealed yet never whole, suspended within the patterns of their own skin. They falter, caught in an action bog of their own making, or perhaps mine.
A work of non-narrative cinema, the piece is guided by a score from electroacoustic and musique concrète composer Andrew Zukerman. Created during a 2025 summer residency at the Toronto Animated Image Society, with production funding support from the Society.
Winston Hacking is known for recontextualizing found footage and photography through compositing and stop-motion animation. He has directed music videos for Flying Lotus, Andy Shauf, and Run The Jewels, with his projects featured in Found Footage Magazine, Cartoon Brew, and Vimeo Staff Picks. Hacking’s work has been showcased at festivals such as OIAF and Annecy, as well as many local and international microcinemas.
Recently, he completed animations for the Paul McCartney documentary Man on the Run, directed by Morgan Neville and completed a residency at the Toronto Animated Image Society, where he created his latest experimental short.
Hacking also creates limited-edition risograph zines, including No Sweat!, Fog Nozzle, and A Dopey Photo Slop, which are distributed by Colour Code Printing.
Madonna - Isabella Buchannan

This project relies on the fluctuation between home movies and avant-garde aesthetics. Using symbols from numerous iconographic paintings of The Madonna and Child as well as reenactment of miscellaneous film stills, this piece encapsulates the topic of performances of femininity, psychoanalytic thought and interest in mimetic identification theory. Playing with the tension of stillness the piece also relies on the respiratory nature within lighting, values, and color saturation.

Abigail Smith is a collage artist, field recordist, experimental filmmaker, archivist and master librarian based in Santa Fe New Mexico. Smith is a co-founder of No Name Cinema and performs flute and percussion in the expanded cinema trio, K/S/R.

Foula, island of birds, island of travelers. Portal into a 3 mile long Shetland island that is forever in the process of becoming. It is both a roost and an ongoing storm. The ground keeps growing up, accumulating all that we shed there.
This short film explores the filmmaker’s relationship to her father’s homeland growing up across the Atlantic Ocean through poetry and visual dreamscapes made from clay, wood, glass, flowers, and Foula wool.
Emily Gear is an animator, and multimedia artist based in New York and Shetland. She graduated from Hampshire College in 2019 with a BA focused in animation, film and visual art. Creatures, landscape, history and lore are often at the center of her work, whether she’s animating, painting, or embroidering.
